Thoughts around the Christmas Season and turn of the year

Dear members of the „International Union“, dear friends,

It is a special pleasure for me to greet the Leonberger family worldwide and to convey to you, on behalf of the Executive Board of the International Leonberger Union, best wishes for a Merry Christmas and for a happy New Year 2016.

Our member countries today form an active and stability-oriented „International Union“. Let us not forget the past, as we filled with confidence and trust look towards the future. Every now and then it is called for to be somewhat conservative on specific topics. For us „dog people“  this means, to preserve what is valuable and at the same time be open for necessary topics.

„Those who do not go with the times, will in time go “. This saying is also true for pedigree dog breeding clubs. With foresight and expertise, to find the correct balance between tradition and modernity, is a challenge we must continually stand up to.  Let us look at our breed not only with sympathy, but also in respect to health. This is our highest maxim.

May the Advent and Christmas days give you and your families new strength and confidence for the year 2016, for which I wish you all the best, most of all health and happiness!

For the Executive Board of the International Union

Your
Willi Güllix, President

Research project of the German Club for Leonberger dogs, in collaboration with the Institute of Animal Breeding and Genetics University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover

Long living Dogs
Exceptionally long life
Extremely long life is a genetically controlled trait with very high heredity degree. This is already proven in some studies on dogs. Extreme old age is associated in relationship with a number of specific gene variants. These gene variants allow a very high age with low disease incidences, as these genes can buffer defect gene variations. They are also called anti-aging genes.
For this reason, an extremely practical breeding approach would be, a positive selection of animals that have become very old and have achieved this without serious diseases.
Life expectancy for dogs
The maximum lifetime of dogs can be more than 20 years. Dogs with very advanced age are with high certainty free from congenital anomalies and hereditary defects. A large portion of extremely long living dogs, until their life’s end are free from serious diseases and externally perceivable tumors. These dogs consequently carry genes that allow neither hereditary defect nor hereditary disposition leading to early death causing diseases.
Project "Long Living Leonberger"
In the project "Long living Leonberger" the entire genetic material of extremely long-lived dogs, will be characterized using a highly advanced next-generation sequencing analyses method. From this data, genome profiles for long living dogs will be developed and genetic variants that do not allow a development of abnormalities, diseases and tumors will be identified. These genome-wide profiles help the dog breeder, to protect his future breeding animals and their descendants from hereditary defects to diseases and tumors.
Osteosarcoma
Osteosarcoma is the most common bone tumor in dogs. Primarily affects large growing and older dogs. The etiology is not clear. The prognosis is poor, although in recent years various surgical and conservative concepts have led to a prolongation of life and have improved the quality of life.
Diagnostics
The histological diagnosis is made based on the typical clinical diagnostics and on the findings of the X-ray examination.
Symptoms
lameness
increased body volume
Heredity
The way of inheritance
is not yet fully understood. The occurrence of Osteosarcoma is probably multifactorial (genetic and environmental factors). There are several genes involved in the development of osteosarcoma, so it is inherited polygenic.
Participation and Project framework
- The DCLH is fully funding this project.
- Therefore no costs for dog owners as a result of participation in the project.
- Costs incurred by blood sampling, the submission of samples and documents will be fully reimbursed by the DCLH, subject to adequate proof i.e. Bills/Receipts
   etc.

- There will be regular reporting on the project results
- The Institute for Animal Breeding and Genetics at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover will create a database for long-lived dogs as well as a database for dogs with Osteosarcoma.
- A complete genome sequencing of extremely long-lived dogs and dogs with Osteosarcoma will take place.
- Genome profiles and catalogs of genetic variants with a positive effect on an exceptionally long life will be created.
- Identification of the key factors for the retention of an undisturbed organ function.
- Regions in the genetic material that lead to Osteosarcoma, will be identified by genome sequence data.
- Application: Development of a genetic test.
- For all data sent, a strict confidentiality is guaranteed.
- Participation is open to all dog owners and dog breeders whose Leonberger has reached a minimum age of 13 years, and
- All dog owners and dog breeders who own a Leonberger, who has been diagnosed with osteosarcoma
- A free of charge storage of EDTA-blood samples for all owners of a Leonberger at the Institute of Animal Breeding and Genetics, University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover is possible. In this case, the dog owner only has to pay the cost of taking the blood sample. If the dog, over the project time, then meets the criteria, it will be incorporated into the study. Shipping information for samples can be found on the following website:

http://www.tiho-hannover.de/kliniken-institute/institute/institut-fuer-tierzucht-und-vererbungsforschung/forschung/forschungsprojekte-hund/langlebige-hunde/
It will not happen without your participation!

Please help and collaborate with us for the benefit of Leonberger dogs.

We are asking Leonberger owners to come forward if you own or know of a relevant dog. We are looking for Leonbergers that are at least 13 years old and apart from age-related "aches and pains» are healthy and those who are suffering from Osteosarcoma under the age of 5 years. Krefeld, Germany, 20th December 2014.

All the best wishes for the Christmas Season and the New Year 2015.

Dear members of the International Union, Dear Leonberger - friends near and far.

It is with great pleasure and at the same time an honour for me, to send in the name of the Board of Directors of the International Union, Christmas and New Years Greetings to the Leonberger Family around the world.

The year 2014 is coming to an end. The holidays and the time until the beginning of the New Year brings us a few days of peace and reflection in our fast-moving times. We have the opportunity to celebrate Christmas with our families and friends.
We have time for thoughts about ourselves, about what we felt was important to us this past year and time for decisions to be made regarding what is important to us in the future.

Looking back over the past year, we find that many things have happened and yet, we tend to keep in our memories those most important to us and what really counts for us.
For many of us, the year that is coming to an end will be connected with good memories. For some of us it will also be connected with hours of grief and sad events.

In our common passion, the love to the Leonberger, we deal with various topics in the breeding and exhibition sector. In all our responsibility to the breed and in view of certain difficulties not always an easy task. To find the right balance between tradition and modernity is a challenge that we must continue to strive for. We must look at our breed not only with sympathy, but also with respect to health.
Working together and learning from each other is a guarantee for success. However working together in all its diversity is also a challenge. It is important that we speak clearly about issues and clearly name problems. Even if it is a difficult and laborious way to find a consistent line, it is worthwhile!

I would like to sincerely thank everyone that throughout the year have followed the objectives of the "International Leonberger Union" and have represented them for the benefit of our breed and our common interests.

Hoping that Christmas 2014 will be a happy event, which you will fondly look back at and that it will be a true "Festival of Joy" for you.

On behalf of the Board, I wish you and your families a blessed and Merry Christmas and a healthy and successful new year in 2015.
May all of your goals be reached and wishes come true!

For the Board of Directors of the international Leonberger Union

Yours Sincerely, Willi Güllix, President

U.S.A., 28 Ocotober 2013

The Leonberger Health Foundation
For Immediate Release

October 28, 2013

The First Waltraut Zieher Memorial Award winners notified.

Anita Treichler, President of the Leonberger Club of Switzerland and Mary Decher, Founder and Past President of the Leonberger Club of America were notified over the weekend that they were the inaugural recipients of this international award for their outstanding contributions to worldwide Leonberger Health and Longevity. They will be honored at a special ceremony at the LCA National Specialty in Burlington, Vermont, April 23 – 27, 2014.

The women were nominated by individual groups of their peers that included breeders, companion dog owners, representatives of their respective national clubs and members of the international Leonberger community.

Mary was speechless when she was notified. With tears in her eyes she recalled the years she and Waltraut spent bringing health to the forefront of the Leonberger Club of America. She then commented, “You know, my interest in science and health began when I was a child. My parents were both scientists and so I knew where to turn when my puppies were diagnosed with Addisons. I am so grateful to them and grateful to all scientific researchers who care about our dogs.”

Anita told LHF President, Teresa Schaffler, “ Looking at the Leo Letter from December 2012, with the smiling face of Waltraut and the loving Leonberger I'm deeply moved of your announcement. I regret not to have more time to share with her. The days in Estes Park at your club show and in the room for taking blood samples, sharing the same goal, the health of our beloved breed, are unforgettable. I'm highly honored being chosen for the Waltraut Zieher prize and I hope to be present in Vermont to share the National Specialty.”

Both women are known for their courage in bringing to light the existence of unwelcome genetic mutations in the Leonberger Breed--Mary with Addison’s Disease and Anita with Leonberger Polyneuropathy. In the face of potential criticism of themselves as breeders, they chose to work tirelessly to bring these breed-specific health issues to the attention of the international Leonberger community.

Both women contacted researchers and helped to establish fundraising mechanisms for their respective national Leonberger clubs. Mary was one of the Founding members of the Leonberger Health Foundation. Both continue to be active today.

Addison’s Disease was virtually eliminated from the American population of Leonbergers due to Mary’s work with breeders and the collection of DNA for researchers who were interested in the disease; among them Dr. Elaine Ostrander of the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Ry Wagner of the University of Oregon, and Anita Oberbauer of the University of California at Davis. The initial research on Addison’s Disease in Leonbergers was funded entirely by the Leonberger Health Foundation. Later research has been funded by the LHF working in concert with the AKC’s Canine Health Foundation.

Through the efforts of American Leonberger breeder and health advocate, Ann Rogers and the canine genetics laboratory of Dr. James Mickelson at the University of Minnesota, Anita was able to bring the canine genetics team of the University of Bern in Switzerland in to the search for the genetic mutations responsible for Leonberger Polyneuropathy. With the aid of funding from the LHF, the CHF and the Leonberger Club of Switzerland researchers from both Universities were able to isolate and develop a test for the mutation that causes the LPN1 variation of the disease. They are now addressing other forms of the disorder.

Madrid, Spain, 21st May 2011

Hello, my name is Angustias Ocaña and I’m writing from Spain, to notify the results of my leonbergers.
At the International Dog Show “Alianza Cinófila Latina”, celebrated on May 21th in Madrid (3528 entries), we were 3º Best Breeding Group of that day.
I don’t know if this is really important in the “leonberger world”, it really was important for me and my leonberger lover friends, because our breed is almost never considerated at the finals in dog shows and is almost never at the podium, here in Spain.
It didn’t ocurr to me it could be interesting for the rest of european people, but a friend recently convince me of writing and so here I am...

This breeding group was formed by three of my young females of my first litter, they were 10-months-old gentle girls at that moment, their names: “Ewok”, “Geisha” and “Marlene” de la Flor entre Espinas (that’s my kennel name ), their father was “Gismo Von Der Bärenpranke” and their mother is “Ch. Dahlia de la Vallée des Lions”. The jduge of the breeding groups was Roberto Velez-Pico.

I send to you a picture, in case you want to publish the news. These two dog shows, the “alianza cinófila latina” and the “Centenario RSCE” were really special for our leonbergers, because first we went up to the podium in breeding groups and next day, my litter’s grandfather, Ch. Béla Bartók vom Welland, was BOB Veterans and went up to the podium also!!! Very intense and joyful for us!!

  Herr

 Georg Leipelt

 (18. Dezember 1936 – 26. Juni 2011)

Thoughts to the upcoming Holiday Season.

Dear Members of the “International Union”, Dear Friends,

It is with great pleasure and at the same time an honour for me, to send in the name of the Board of Directors of the International Union, Christmas and New Years Greetings to the Leonberger Family around the world.

Please allow me to take this opportunity to take a look at the present and to direct our vision towards the future.

Today our Membership Countries represent an active and stabilisation-orientated “International Union”. Let us not forget the past, when we filled with trust and confidence stride towards the future. With some sensitive topics we must occasionally react somewhat conservatively. For us Dog-People this means we must preserve what is valuable but at the same time must be open for new necessities. “Go with the times or you will in time go” , in my opinion this saying applies well to Pedigree Dog Breeding Clubs. To find the right balance between tradition and contemporary is a challenge that we best master with expertise and vision. Let us view our breed not only with sympathy but also with respect in regards to health issues. This is our highest dictum.

Very impressive in a positive sense was the General Meeting 2010. This was a very lively conference, especially as we reached the topic “Vitality” of our breed, which was intensely discussed. It clearly showed that we are the Leonberger Family that we should be, when the named subject is keeping our breed healthy. Genetic illnesses must be rigorously confronted, but also with calmness and expertise. We will not reach our goal if panic is spread. It is absolutely necessary that we work jointly in this area.

To work together and to learn from each other is a guarantor of success. However, teamwork in a global environment which is characterized by diversity is definitely a challenge. It is important that we clearly discuss and define our problems. Even if it is occasionally a difficult and cumbersome road to finding a uniform guideline, it will always be worthwhile!

It is my personal ambition, to bring forward a harmonic cooperation, interchanging ideas and good teamwork amongst us all. Let us continue to work together with vision directed towards the future for a strong Leonberger Union.

May the Christmas Season give you and your Families new strength and hope for the

New Year 2011. I wish you all the best, above all health and happiness!

 For the
International Union Board of Directors

      Your

Leonberger owners from all over Britain bought their pooches to the ceremony in Basingstoke, Hants, to say farewell to Fred.
His widow Jenny said: "It's a fitting testament to Fred that the dogs were with him today. He loved them.
"I'm so touched because what could have been a very sad day has turned into a tribute to Fred's life."

Online scam swindles dog lovers

ONLINE scammers have swindled thousands of dollars out of dog lovers by selling puppies that never arrive.

Vicitms of the scam paid between $1440 and $2725 to "Newfview Kennels" which claims to have a kennel in South Australia but is not a registered business.
Minister for Consumer Affairs Gail Gago said the website claims to have Newfoundland, Chesapeake and Leonberger puppies for sale and provides a mobile number to call to place an order.
"All transactions are made via telephone and money is paid directly into a bank account belonging to Andrew Pike of Newfview Kennels," Ms Gago said.
After payment, a delivery date is set and agreed to but the puppies fail to arrive on the scheduled date.
These unsuspecting customers have not received a puppy or a refund despite repeated requests and promises."
Six people have made formal complains to the Office of Consumer and Business Affairs.

From ABC news:

A warning has been issued about a business claiming to sell puppies after six complaints were received by the South Australian Office of Consumer Affairs.
SA Consumer Affairs Minister Gail Gago says in one case the internet business called new view kennels was paid nearly $3,000 for a puppy but failed to deliver it.
Ms Gago says she has taken the rare step of issuing a public warning about the man running the business, Andrew Pike.
"SAPOL [South Australian Police] are working with police in other states in an attempt to locate Mr Pike," she said.
"He's got a track record of dishonest behaviour. Back in 2006 in New South Wales he was actually convicted of falsely representing himself as a solicitor.

The here mentioned kennel has in the past years contacted several Leonberger breeders to buy puppies from them.
Accordirg to reliable informations he doesn't owe any Leonberger at the moment.

International judges Seminar 2009.

Judges play an important role in the canine world.
A passion that is pursued with great love, commitment and provision of personal free time.
This includes the will to and obligation for ongoing training, which was accaomplishd this weekend with a large number of international participants.

"International" is indeed the right word,  33 participants from 15 nations had traveled to the hometown of the Leonberger to attend this event.

Our President and Conference Chairman Willi Güllix warmly welcomed the fellow  judges  on behalf of the Board of the International Union  and expressed his hope that the event would run  smoothly and that the seminar would be interesting,  and informative for all participants..

The objective of the event was  to present and discuss the points on the agenda in a professional manner.

For multilingual seminars it is important that documentation and correct translation is available for all. Therefore the speakers worked with modern equipment, like  a laptop with power point presentations, partly in German and English. On two screens.  The discussions and comments were immediately translated.

Explained in lectures by an international team, and  widely discussed,  were;

Dr. Guido Perosino (Italy), Focus: The head of the Leonberger, analysis of standard requirements for form and expression, using head study pictures.

Peter Cejnek (Austria) , Focus: The breed image evolution and related quality changes.

Petra Junehall (Sweden) , Focus: type and proportions, disqualifying faults.

Willi Güllix (Germany), Focus:  Gait, movement, and course of movement, caninus narrow standing, interpretation of the breed standard and writing critiques.

The final word was reserved for our President. The good work of the speakers, who had spent days and weeks in preparing the speeches, was  rewarded with a big applause.

Hoping that the goal, being an uniform evaluation of our breed, has come a   good step closer, he didn’t only thank the participants for coming, but also for their participation in fruitful discussions.

Internationale Zuchtrichter-Tagung 2009
7-8 November. Clubheim / Leonberg.

As result of the “International Judges Seminar 2009” the participating judges agreed on following recommendations:
Over the coming years they shall, whilst judging our breed, pay extra attention to a substantial/harmonic construction, correct proportions of head and muzzle, straight parallel fore and hind legs with obvious angulation in the hind legs, and especially see to the carriage of the tail while standing and in movement as prescribed by the standard.
