Breed Standards

Leonbergers from all member nations of the FCI are judged on the basis of the FCI Standard for Leonbergers .
The FCI (Federation Cynologique International) is an international umbrella of national kennel clubs. The standard for breeds from countries, affiliated to FCI, is made by the country of origin, so for the Leonberger the standard is from Germany. A list of the FCI-member countries can be found on the FCI Website:

Non-FCI-member countries can not use the FCI standard, because their kennel clubs want a national breed club to be responsible for the breed standards and the kennel clubs have requirements concerning the contents of breed standards.  The non-FCI-member clubs of the International Leonberger Union try to keep the breed standards as indentical as possible to the FCI standard, but because of kennel club requirements there may be minor differences.
