HEALTH:

Mandatory LPN, LPPN and LEMP tests are not approved because the number of D/D results from
French dogs is too low.

LPN1&2, LPPN3 and LEMP testing – exclusion of D/D and D/N from breeding is strongly
recommended by the French Leonberger Club.

OTHERS:

In France, dog breeding is legally regulated in the rural law.
Dogs may only be bred by certified professional breeders who are registered as breeders with the
Chamber of Commerce and who are under the supervision of the veterinary service. Private
individuals can breed a maximum of 1 litter of purebred dogs registered with the Kennel Club per
year, breeding a second litter in a year or a litter whose puppies cannot be registered as pure breed
is illegal.

The kennel club, which is supervised by the ministry, implements the legal rules, supplemented with
its own rules approved by the ministry that apply to all breeds.

A breed association may propose breed-specific additional rules that must be approved by the
kennel club.

Puppies receive a provisional pedigree/birth certificate.

The pedigree of a dog imported from abroad has the status of a birth certificate. The pedigree of a
stud dog living abroad is accepted as a pedigree.

Puppies from dogs with a birth certificate cannot be registered and are therefore illegal if they are
bred by a private individual.

After confirmation (a judgement from the age of 15 months), the birth certificate is replaced by a
definitive pedigree.
A confirmed dog has breeding level 1.

Level 1: Confirmed pedigree. If used for breeding the DNA profile is necessary.

Level 2: Confirmed pedigree, DNA profile, HD A/B/C, ED 0/SL/1, Minimum 1 Very Good on a show,
TAN (=judgement, temperament and endurance test).

Level 3: Confirmed pedigree, DNA profile, HD A/B, ED 0/SL/1, Minimum 1 Very Good on a show + 1
